You know when you're driving and all of a sudden you realize that you don't remember driving for the last fifteen minutes . . . and you don't know how you got there? Calvin Miller drifts through a deepening maze of questionable decisions, following a trail of crumbs in search of a place to call home.
This is not a perfect film and that is what makes it so good. Robert and Molly wrote an interesting script that defies convention. It doesn’t fit into any normal mold. Thank goodness! The film is a true look at character, and the discovery of finding our own character, through a series of adventures. In this case trying to solve the mystery of a dead relative’s missing things. A truly character driven film, that with each piece uncovered we can start to see who these characters really are. The film is a narrative sitting within another narrative, like The English Patient. The story he tells is fascinating. The set up to the story wasn’t as exciting for me. But that is a small imperfection.
The acting here was top notch. The use of shadow and light reminded me at times of film noir and was used perfectly. The cinematography was excellent and some of the visuals of Louisville were breath taking. This was a film that will not be for everyone because it makes you think. Take the ride because it is well worth it! By the end all makes sense and the charcters are completely exposed with all of their flaws intact. It is not all wrapped up neatly with a bow. Its life. And it’s a very interesting and enjoyable film.
